Common tracking milestones

Tracking messages vary by carrier, but many international shipments move through pickup, origin processing, export departure, transit, import customs, local delivery, and final delivery.

Milestone Meaning What to check
Picked up The carrier or agent has collected the cargo. Confirm carton count and weight match the order.
In transit The shipment is moving through the carrier network. Monitor planned route and estimated delivery.
Customs clearance Documents or import review may be in progress. Prepare invoice, importer data, and any requested documents.
Exception Carrier needs action or there is a route issue. Check whether address, customs, payment, or delivery appointment is blocking.

How to write better customer updates

  • State the current milestone, not only the carrier link.
  • Separate confirmed facts from estimated delivery dates.
  • Mention whether action is required from the customer.
  • Avoid over-promising when the shipment is in customs review.

For shipments that are not ready yet, use the customs checklist and quote data builder first.
